The Chesapeake Baysavers is an Annapolis-based environmental organization with a mission to restore the health of the Chesapeake Bay through legislative efforts, community outreach, and hands-on, environmental education programs for youth.
In order to accomplish our mission, Chesapeake BaySavers is made up of two separate entities that each play a vital role:
Chesapeake Baysavers Foundation is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization with a mission to restore the health of the Chesapeake Bay through education, community outreach and hands-on environmental work.
Chesapeake Baysavers, Inc. is a 501(c)(4) non-profit organization whose mission is to preserve, protect and promote the health of the Chesapeake Bay through legislative efforts, with a focus on legislation that affects oysters.”
The founders of Chesapeake BaySavers believe that one way to help restore our glorious Bay’s health is to encourage the natural water cleansing process in which oysters play such an enormous role. One oyster can filter 50 to 100 gallons of water a day. That means a fully functioning oyster bed can filter up to 20,000 gallons a day.
It’s simple. Oysters clean the Chesapeake Bay. We want to put oysters back in the Bay to do what they do so well. The Chesapeake BaySavers hopes to encourage hundreds of pier owners, community associations, waterfront municipalities, marinas, and homeowners to become stewards for the reconstruction of a healthy Chesapeake Bay.
We work closely with the Oyster Recovery Partnership, Maryland Department of Natural Resources, Chesapeake Bay Foundation, and others to further our oyster restoration efforts.
