Oyster Planting in Baltimore

Partook in the largest oyster planting in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor!

This past September 2016, the Chesapeake BaySavers joined other volunteers to work with the Healthy Harbor Initiative and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation to build over 100 oyster cages and plant over 60,000 spat-on-shell which made it Baltimore’s largest oyster garden!

On May 20th our oysters were finally ready to be planted at Fort Carroll where harvesting is STILL illegal to harvest thanks to our efforts to prohibit commercial interests from opening up our oyster sanctuaries to harvest this past legislative session.

We planted nearly 62,000 oysters that will join other oysters and benthic organisms to filter the Patapsco River, as well as provide habitat and food for other marine life!
