Evan Thalenberg, President & Co-Founder

Evan Thalenberg

Evan Thalenberg is a conservationist and attorney with over twenty-five years of experience in environmental law.

After his oldest daughter was advised by her physician that her pregnancy could be adversely affected by swimming in the Bay, Evan and his family made a commitment to Bay restoration. The Chesapeake BaySavers was created in 2008 to take concrete steps, primarily through legislative action and community outreach, to accomplish long overdue advancement in creating a healthier Chesapeake Bay. It is our mission to serve as a legislative force for the health of the Chesapeake Bay and to educate the community in that regard.

Mr. Thalenberg obtained his MBA from Fairleigh Dickinson and his JD from University of Baltimore. As an attorney, Mr. Thalenberg and his law firm have been engaged in the practice of environmental law for over twenty-five years and he has received many awards including the Maryland Association for Justice Advocacy Award for outstanding trial work in the area of toxic tort litigation. He has lectured on trial advocacy techniques to state and national groups including, but not limited to, the American Trial Lawyers Association and the Maryland Bar Association. Mr. Thalenberg has appeared as a guest expert on radio and television throughout the country in regard to environmental law issues.

Evan Thalenberg is admitted to practice in Maryland, District of Columbia, U.S. District Court (Maryland) and the Fourth Circuit Court of Appeals as well as the Supreme Court of the United States.

Brendan Gill, Vice-President

Brendan GillBrendan, a graduate of the University of Virginia, offers an extensive background in real estate management, brokerage and development. As President of MacKenzie Management Company, he divides his time between business development for asset management services, tenant retention, acquisitions and development, and the ongoing management of a very significant property portfolio.

During his tenure, Brendan has been integral in the development of nearly 800,000 square feet of commercial space for MacKenzie’s portfolio and third-party clients. In addition, he has extensive experience as a Tenant Representative for MacKenzie’s Brokerage division and has managed over 700,000 square feet of stabilized, income producing retail, office, and medical office projects. Prior to joining MacKenzie, Brendan was a member of the sales and leasing team in Cushman & Wakefield’s San Diego Office where he concentrated on tenant representation.

Brendan is a designated Certified Commercial Investment Member (CCIM), one of the leading commercial real estate designations in the world. In addition, he sits on the board for the National Association of Industrial and Office Properties (NAIOP) Maryland Chapter and is a founding board member of Chesapeake BaySavers, Inc.

Brendan lives in Eastport with his wife and three children.


Mark Murphy, Treasurer

Mark Murphy Mark J. Murphy, CFP® Managing Partner
With over a decade of financial industry experience, Mark is a CERTIFIED FINANCIAL PLANNER™ professional and Managing Partner with Private Wealth Partners, LLC. He began his career with Legg Mason Wood Walker in their Private Client Group. In 2006 he joined Smith Barney as a result of their merger with Legg Mason before joining Private Wealth Partners, LLC in 2007.

Mark holds a bachelor’s degree in finance from Loyola College. While there, he served as Captain of their nationally ranked lacrosse team and received the scholar-athlete and leadership awards for the program.

In addition to his work at Private Wealth Partners, LLC, Mark has previously served as president of the St. Mary’s Alumni Association Board of Directors. In addition to being a member of the BaySavers board, he currently serves as President of the St. Mary’s Royal Blue Club. He also is involved with Friends of the Annapolis Lighthouse Shelter, Fish For a Cure and the Bowen Foundation. He and his wife, Gail, live in Annapolis with their three children.


Nick Clark, Board Member

Nick ClarkNick Clark joins the board of Chesapeake BaySavers bringing along 10 years of banking experience with the 3 most recent years in commercial lending. He is currently a Vice President and Senior Relationship Manager with M&T Bank’s Business and Professional Banking division out of Annapolis, MD.

Nick started his banking career with Bank of America after graduating from Union College in Schenectady, NY with a degree in finance and economics. He quickly moved from a sales associate to branch manager and was utilized as a sales process expert in revamping multiple local branches around the Anne Arundel market.

Nick joined M&T in May of 2007 as a commercial branch manager working with companies from start up to $1.5 million in annual sales. In his current role, Nick works with business up to $15 million in sales for lending, deposits, treasury management and merchant services needs. Nick’s approach as an advisor and partner to his customers helps unsure that he is meeting the ongoing needs of their growing businesses.

Nick’s passion for the environment dates back to his childhood where he grew up in Vermont and enjoyed outdoor activities throughout every season. He is a current resident of Kent Island and enjoys the benefits that the bay provides to the surrounding communities.


Kat Conley, Board Member

A fifth generation Washingtonian, Kat has supported the work of Chesapeake BaySavers since its inception.

Kat graduated from Rosemont College with a degree in Political Science. She has been actively involved in residential real estate since 1991. Throughout her career, she has been recognized as one of Washington’s “Top Producing” real estate professionals. She is currently associated with Christie’s Great Estates, Long & Foster Realty.

In addition to her home in Bethesda, she and her husband have a second residence in Chestertown on Maryland’s Eastern Shore.




Cecil Cummins, Board Member

Cecil Cummins

Cecil works as a broker for the sale, acquisitions and leasing of Commercial Real Estate in Annapolis, MD and the surrounding markets. In addition to his brokerage, Cecil serves as a consultant analyst for firms hired to assist cities with the large real estate developments and most recently worked on a 100+ acre project with the City of Princeton, New Jersey. Cecil has diverse experience including work as a social media consultant to a victorious Mayoral Campaign, coordination of events for Accredited Investor groups, and is an experienced public speaker having spoken on stage with renowned speakers Gary Vaynerchuk and David Osborn. Cecil currently sits on the board of Directors for the Chesapeake Baysavers Foundation and is an Active member of the Comptroller of the State of Maryland’s Business Advisory Council.

Mr. Cummins is a native of Annapolis, Maryland and spends his time managing his real estate investment portfolio, and seeking adventure around the world. He received a Bachelor of Arts in Economics, Accounting and Business Administration from McDaniel College. He currently resides in the Eastport neighborhood of Annapolis.


Linda Davis, Board Member

Linda Davis

Linda Davis, a 5th generation Annapolitan, is President of The Davis Group, LLC., a consulting specialist in business development, nonprofit branding, fundraising and high profile special events. Linda focuses her professional experience towards working with non-profit clients on donor strategy and relations, as well as fundraising and corporate partnerships. She has been on the board of Chesapeake BaySavers since it’s beginning working closely with the founders on creating a mission statement that accurately represents the good work of the organization. As part of the 501(c)4, Linda has lobbied before the Maryland State Senate on important bills that directly affect the Chesapeake Bay.

Growing up on Spa Creek and Lake Ogleton, in Annapolis, and raising her two children on the Chesapeake Bay, Linda and her husband, Chuck, have a deep appreciation for the value of working towards a clean and healthy bay. Linda spends much of her professional and personal time working with organizations to ensure these great waterways will be around for many generations to come.


Shelly Ford, Board Member

Shelly Ford has been employed with The Brick Companies (TBC) since April of 1996 and has enjoyed her journey from retail associate at their Golf Course in Edgewater to her current position of Head People Person and Chief Responsibility Officer. TBC, a privately held company based in Edgewater, Maryland, owns, develops and manages commercial, residential and recreational properties. The company is committed to environmental and social responsibility, as demonstrated by its “green building” philosophy and its support for charities and social causes through The TBC Foundation.

The Brick Companies mission is to “create memorable places for current and future generations through social responsibility and environmental leadership.”

Shelly has been instrumental in developing the company’s mission and focuses her attention on developing programs and initiatives that support their employees and the communities in which they do business. One of the company’s star properties, Queenstown Harbor Golf Course, is a certified Audubon Sanctuary and the only golf course in the country to receive the Environmental Leader in Golf Award. The first Tuesday in October, since 2003, Shelly and her team of volunteers host the company’s annual TBC Classic Charity Golf Tournament at this property. Since inception, the event has raised over a million dollars to support local charities. In 2017 the event became Zero-Waste with virtually nothing reaching our landfills. The Brick Companies Recently received recognition as the Community Foundation of Anne Arundel County’s Corporate Philanthropist of the Year!

Shelly and her husband Vernon have resided in Edgewater for over 40 years. In all those years they’ve spent countless hours enjoying The Chesapeake Bay with their two children. There are four amazing grandchildren in the picture now who drive Shelly’s passion to raise awareness and expand education to repair and protect our precious waterways.


Roy Hottel, Board Member

Roy Hottel is life Long Annapolitan who grew up on the Chesapeake Bay in Bay Ridge. He and his twin brother, Rob, and sister, LeeAnn, have a great passion for the Chesapeake and all that it offers!

Roy is a graduate of St. Mary’s College of Maryland where he played lacrosse and earned his degree in Economics. Roy is a Vice President, Wealth Advisor here in Annapolis employed with Saunders Wealth Management. Roy is also a Chartered Retirement Planning Counselor (CRPC)



Chris Murray, Board Member

Chris Murray is Vice President of Chesapeake Real Estate Group (CREG), a full-service commercial real estate development, management, and brokerage company. He continues to further his education by pursuing the Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Associate, a credential for real estate professionals who want to gain knowledge about environmentally-friendly design, construction and operations.

Chris is also an active member of NAIOP Maryland, the state’s commercial real estate development association and the Greater Towson Committee, which promotes investment in Towson through revitalization of property and infrastructure.

Chris grew up in the Chesapeake Bay community and still calls it home today. He currently lives in the Severn River community of Epping Forest with his wife, Cary.
